BEST BOOKS 2018 MID YEAR OVERVIEW
The first half of 2018 is almost over, so it’s time to look back to all those new gorgeous books that we can now enjoy.
Some of the books on this list are not a surprise at all, some where and for some others it’s a surprise that they didn’t make it on to my list. Only the best will get a place!
One tiny personal thing I want to say: I mentioned in an earlier post that I finished my dissertation and now I got my results and I passed!! I still need to do two exams in September, but I’m so happy I can almost graduate!
1. The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air #1) – Holly Black
This book is one of my favourites for this year because it’s so original. I never read a YA book like this one. Everyone is backstabbing everyone all the time and it makes for amazing plot twists. The main character was also completely amazing. She’s smart and I really love that in characters. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!
After I read the first book in this series, Scythe, I just couldn’t wait to get my hands on the next book in this series. It was so good!! I don’t want to ruin anything for people who haven’t read this series yet, but let’s just say that ending was sooo… surprising!! I really don’t want to say anything else because I’m so afraid of spoiling things for others. Another series I really want the next book of!
This was an unexpected page turner. It’s a memoir written by Tara Westover and it’s about her life, growing up in a Mormon/prepper family and how she starts living her own life. It’s ah-mazing! I’m from Belgium and that sort of life was so far away from me and I learned so so so much from this book. Tara Westover is also an amazing writer, her skills are incredible. A must read for everyone.
4. To Kill A Kingdom
This book is a favourite because of the amazing world Alexandra Christo created for this book. It’s a darker retelling of the little mermaid. Let’s just say the saying “winning his heart” gets a new meaning in this retelling. The story is pretty awesome too, but it really was the beautifully described world that made this a great book for me.
5. Sky in the Deep
This amazing YA viking story is such a girl power story. Give me powerful viking stories any day of the week! Vikings aren’t a topic that many YA authors write about. It’s a beautiful, fast paced historical fiction book that grabbed my attention from the very first page.
6. A Thousand Perfect Notes
Cait really killed her debut novel! It was so good! I was a bit hesitant at first about this book. I really didn’t want to be disappointed by this book because I needed this book to be really good! Cait is an amazing writer, I already knew that from her blog, but writing a book is of course completely different. I was blown away by this book. It has so many feels and it breaks your heart in a thousand pieces! Such a beautiful story. The only downside: the lack of dragons 😉.
7. Olympian Challenger
An unexpected amazing read. This book is about a girl who needs to compete to become the next Olympian hero, but she clearly doesn’t want to! It reminded me a lot of the Percy Jackson books. I loved all the different Gods and it was incredibly fast paced. Overall just a really good book!
8. Iron and Magic
As you may know, I’m a big Ilona Andrews fan. Their stories are so so so good. This book was no exception. It was sexy but the romance didn’t overwhelm the rest of the story. If you haven’t read any of their books, this might not be the best book to start, but I strongly advise everyone to read them!
9. A Court of Frost and Starlight
There were many mixed opinions on this little novella, but I loved it. It was the perfect ending to a really great story. I really missed a good ending at the end of A Court of Wings and Ruin, and this really gave me that ending.
10. Anatomy of A Scandal – Sarah Vaughan
This book is actually the kind of book I really don’t like reading. It’s about an lawyer who works on a rape case. It gets really personal and a real page turner. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did!
So many good books! Now on to the next part of this year!! I hope the next six months will have as many great books as the first six months!
