Book Review: Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles #1) – Ilona Andrews
Title: Clean Sweep Author: Ilona Andrews Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform Release date: December 2nd 2013 Genre: Fantasy
On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is…different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight. Under the circumstances, “normal” is a bit of a stretch for Dina.
And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night….Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive, ex-military, new neighbor, Sean Evans—an alpha-strain werewolf—and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she’s facing is unlike anything she’s ever encountered before. It’s smart, vicious, and lethal, and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything.
This book is so amazing! I’m turning into the biggest Ilona Andrews fan alive. This author duo really turns everything they touch into gold. It took me so much longer than expected to pick up this book and I’m so glad I finally started this series. I wish this book was longer than the 235 pages it is because it is sooo good.
The world building is so sublime. I actually really want to live inside one of their books. Ilona Andrews has some kind of super power that can turn battle scenes into something cosy. It’s quite difficult to explain what I mean by saying that, but I’ll try. If you ever read a Ilona Andrews book you probably understand what I mean. They built these perfect cities or neighbourhoods that still manage to be believable. The magic they include is often very useful for everyday use
Every scene they built is lovely and warm bec that you really want to live there because it just feels so perfect and even when they are fighting the most powerful and cruel monsters, it feels like that’s just a minor set back because everything just felt so perfect.
The whole concept of planet earth being a neutral planet where all those crazy alien creatures can pass through safely and maybe stay at an inn is so amazing and creative. I was sucked in by this story and I didn’t want it too end. Ever.
I actually hoped there would be a little bit more romance. I’m keeping my hopes up for the next books in the series, but after that ending I don’t know we will get more romance anytime soon. This minor setback and he fact that the book is rather short are the reason why I didn’t give this book 5 stars. It was almost perfect for me but 50 pages of romance would have made it a perfect hit for me.
Don’t hesitate if you never read an Ilona Andrews book, you really miss out on something amazing!
